Moving from Austin to Kyle or Buda
Kyle and Buda sit along I-35 in Hays County, south of Austin. Many of our clients move here from Austin for newer homes, more space or a quieter pace while keeping an easy drive into the city.
Kristin and Dustin live and work here, and we help relocating buyers compare towns and neighborhoods on the things that actually change your monthly cost and your daily drive.
Getting around
- I-35 is the main route north to Austin and south to San Marcos and San Antonio.
- SH 45 (toll) connects Buda and Kyle to MoPac and southwest Austin without using I-35.
- SH 130 (toll) runs east of Kyle as an I-35 alternative.
- FM 1626, FM 150 and FM 967 link Kyle and Buda to the Hill Country side.
Taxes and monthly costs
Texas has no state personal income tax, so property taxes do more of the work. Your rate depends on the city, county, school district and any special district the home sits in.
Many newer Hays County neighborhoods are in a Municipal Utility District (MUD) or Public Improvement District (PID), which adds a tax or assessment that pays for the community's infrastructure. Two similar homes a mile apart can have different total rates, so we compare the full picture: price, tax rate, HOA dues and any MUD or PID before you choose.
Comparing towns
- Kyle: established neighborhoods near downtown plus large master-planned communities like 6 Creeks, Plum Creek, Anthem and Crosswinds.
- Buda: closest to Austin along I-35 and SH 45, with a historic downtown and communities such as Sunfield, Garlic Creek and Carpenter Hill.
- San Marcos: the Hays County seat, home to Texas State University, with Hill Country communities like La Cima and close-in neighborhoods.
- Dripping Springs and Wimberley: Hill Country towns with larger lots and acreage.
